Making use of the VIV (vortex induced vibration) phenomenon, the present energy harvester vibrates within a certain range of wind speed range, moves the magnets and wires inside the vibrating harvester body to generate electricity. The operating wind speed range is designed to be around 3 m/s, which is the average wind speed in Taiwan, in order to achieve maximum energy generation.
The team used the phenomenon of Vortex Induced Vibration to produce periodic vortex shedding in the flow field, and controlled the vortex shedding frequency to match the natural resonance frequency of the device to produce large vibrations. After that, designed an effective energy converter to convert the vibration energy into electrical energy.
Akash Bhunia is a senior student at Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute Of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur.He came to our lab in May 2020 for a two-month summer internship program.
The team designed a small bladeless generator that can generate electricity through vortex induced vibration. The principle is to use the periodic vortex shedding formed behind a bluff body to generate alternative force, thereby causing the body to vibrate. In addition, the team focused on the design of an energy conversion devices that made use of the Principles of Electromagnetics to convert vibration energy into electrical energy.
We designed an unconventional wind energy harvester. It is low price, structurally simple, low operating wind speed and low carbon footprint, thus it is well suited to the needs of developing countries. In addition, as the concern on the issues of carbon emissions and nuclear safety is escalating, the current developed countries have begun to pay more attention to the exploit of green energy and reduce the use the fossil fuel and nuclear energy. And the present wind energy harvesting device can become a very good substitution of conventional energy generators.
At the end of the semester, laboratory organized barbecue, inviting undergraduate students and AUV, UAV team members together to participate.
In order to clearly analyze the vortex and the vibration caused by fluid-structure interaction between fluid and rigid body, we need to establish a precise and efficient CFD solution setup. In the first stage, we focused on the dynamic mesh technique. The results showed that deforming mesh was more efficient than overset mesh. Afterwards, the amplitude data was validated by changing the natural frequency of the rigid body under Reynold’s number of 10000. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of these two methods were discussed
